First Foods: Root/Leaf Vegetables

Because of nitrates in the soil that is absorbed by these vegetables: beets, carrots, cabbage, broccoli and spinach, it's best to make your baby food using a hydroponic source or purchase those bottled when your baby is first introduced to solid food. Jarred baby food, in this instance, may be the safest way to go. Root vegetables in general shouldn't be introduced until after your baby is year old. If you do make your own baby food, make sure the water you use is chlorine free.

Store bought organic baby food:

Earth's Best - around $4-6 for a six-pack of jarred food at clarksnutrition,

Plum Organics - boxes range from $3.49-3.99) at babysrus,

Healthy Times - $0.69-.99 per 4 oz at vitacost.com, shoporganic.com, clarksnutrition

Yummy Spoonfuls - $2 per 4 oz at amazon, yummyspoonsfuls,

Tasty Baby - at Amazon, $39.90 for six 10.5 oz. boxes, plus free shipping and boxedgreens
