This post is dedicated to the fashion hits and misses of the Screen Actors' Guild Awards, and there's a good possibility it's going to be even more brutal than my post about the Golden Globe Awards fashions.
Hailee Steinfeld (from True Grit) looked really fresh. I loved her long, loose waves and very natural makeup. The dress was fun and playful with a unique blend of colors and the shape was great on her figure. She's only 14, so I feel like this look was really age-appropriate for her.
Jenna Ushkowitz looked downright horrible for me. Her hair was boring. Her makeup was too cool-toned to go with her ugly-ass champagne dress. And what the hell is that disgusting thing hanging around her neck? This look is so sad for me because she looked so incredible at the Golden Globes, so we know she's capable of looking gorgeous. On a final note, if you happened to see this dress from straight on, you probably caught sight of the fact that she desperately needed some Spanx because you could see the outline of her belly button through the fabric of her dress. Not becoming.
Amber Riley, who almost had it right at the Golden Globes, hit the nail on the head at the SAG Awards. The shape of her gown really flatters her slimmed-down figure (way to go on losing weight), and the floral details on the shoulder and from the knees down add interest without weighing the dress down. Her hair is a thousand percent better than it was at the Golden Globes, and her makeup is flawless - I absolutely love the pop of fuchsia lipstick. Very, very well done.
Jennifer Lawrence, from Winter's Bone, really screwed up a dress that could have been beautiful with horrible styling. Her hair is too severe and ages her. Her eye makeup is too dark and dramatic. And what the hell was the purpose of that black velvet bow at the waist? There was already so much going on at the neckline and shoulders that she really didn't need the sash. The color of the dress was so beautiful, but this bitch just screwed everything up. I would love to see this dress on January Jones or Olivia Wilde instead - they usually have better taste in styling.
Mila Kunis keeps getting hotter every time I see her. I love that she went to the complete opposite spectrum of her look at the Golden Globes - a flowy, red dress is so opposite of the structured, green one she wore there. Her long, loose curls were sexy and youthful. It really pleases me that she wasn't predictable at all. I think we can expect to see more beautiful looks from her in the future.
Well, Dianna Agron managed to really screw it up this time. While I appreciate the more dramatic makeup than she normally wears, I do not appreciate that hideous tea-length dress. First off, I don't care how skinny and perfect your figure is - tea-length is not attractive on anyone. It just looks like it was hemmed incorrectly. I would have loved a sleek-silhouette midnight blue dress on her instead. I know she's wanting to take a fashion risk, but this is too awful to have even been considered attempting.
I'm glad that Eva Longoria decided to switch it up from her dark, structured look at the Golden Globes. That being said, her draped dress does absolutely nothing for her figure. The panels on the bust just look like bandages draped over her boobs, and the draping on the hips makes her look very boxy. This shape just wasn't flattering for her boyish figure. Thumbs way down.
Lea Michele gave me woman-wood. I thought she looked totally sexy in her champagne draped dress. The accents were amazing - the pale gold belt added a modern touch to the dress, and I thought her messy morning hair was hot. The only thing I would have changed would be her makeup - it would have been nice to see a little bit more drama with her eyes. Otherwise, she was really, really gorgeous.
Natalie Portman was sheer perfection. Her hair was simple and showed off her glowing face. I love the dress and the fact that it was slim enough to show off her growing baby bump. It was a very simple look that was very becoming and ladylike.
Nicole Kidman has apparently lost her mind. This look makes me think she's about to make like Virginia Woolf and drown herself. The hair and makeup were fabulous, but what the hell is that dress? The silhouette would have been beautiful on her figure (particularly the sheer back of it) but the strange bust looks way too 80s for my liking. It's just tacky. On top of it, I don't get why she felt the need to wear the chunky necklace with the already-complicated neckline. This look is one of her worst ever for me.
I had high hopes for Amy Adams that she would be on a fashion winning streak after her triumph at the Golden Globes. Unfortunately, she did not impress me at all. That dress was one of the most unattractive silhouettes I've ever seen. I'm a fan of the sexy bandage dresses, don't get me wrong, but this shape is horrible. It smashes down her bust, giving her weird-looking boobs. And even though she's very tiny, the light color of the dress highlights any flaws with her figure. In addition to that, it's such a pale dress that she's washed out (like she normally is). Amy gets to take a trip back to my personal worst-dressed list.
I'm probably going to catch some serious flack for this, but I absolutely loved January Jones. I'm always so anxious to see what she wears, and I'm loving her choice for the SAG Awards. I think her hair and makeup were flawless, and I was totally wowed by her dress. It was interesting and unique without being tacky and tasteless.
As expected, Naya Rivera makes me want to vomit. Let me count the ways she really effed up this time. 1. Her hair looks limp and her bangs are really weird along the right sid of her hairline. 2. Her makeup is atrocious - the foundation is too light and the lipcolor is not flattering. 3. That dress looks like she bought it from a hippie roadside stand and then bedazzled part of it. It literally looks like potato sacks. She looks like shit, and unfortunately, I've really come to expect this from her. She has absolutely no taste whatsoever, and it's a shame because she really is pretty and has an incredible body.
Well doesn't Kim Kardashian just look like shit? It looks to me like she left her hair in the messy ponytail from last night's drinking binge and did her makeup in the limo. Honey, some fake eyelashes aren't the only thing your face needs. She's so beautiful, but she looks horrible. And her dress looks like something I vomited up from my pageant and prom days. The color would have been exquisite with her complexion and hair color, but the odd detailing and cutouts make it look like something from a 1998 prom portrait. She can do much better than this.
Yes, Sofia Vergara is incredibly beautiful. She might just be one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Yes, she has a mane of flowing, shiny hair. Yes, her body could rival the fittest of the fit and the hottest of the hot. And yes, we all know that she has an unbelievable, drool-worthy rack. That's all fine and dandy but she bores the shit out of me. I literally find my poo more interesting than her because she's so unbelievably predictable it's unfortunate. We can always expect to see her with her hair down and flowing and in a slim-figured dress that shows off her cleavage. While the bold blue is a nice departure from her usual red, I'm just disinterested with her look. I'm hoping to see her do something different with her hair, makeup, and style the next time I see her. And don't get me wrong, I think she looks incredible, I just want to see her change it up a bit.
Sarah Hyland is just okay for me. Her hair looks kind of greasy and limp, but her makeup helps brighten up her appearance. I don't care for the dull shade of orange and would have liked to see something a little brighter and more youthful (she's 20). That being said, the shape is flattering on her. But again, she gets by without being a great look or a horrible look.
Winona Ryder really missed the mark with this look. Her curly ponytail reminded me of my days as a cheerleader and her dress reminded me of someone who got the top layer of her skirt stuck in the car door and it was shredded by the driver pulling away from the curb before she could get her dress out.
Mariska Hargitay was absolutely stunning in her indigo dress. She's no tiny broad, and I like to see how she dresses for her athletic figure. The color is so brilliant against her skin, and I love the pale turquoise earrings that contrast with the dress.
Claire Danes was another winner for me yet again. I loved her natural hair and the bold pink lipstick, and her dress (which could have looked like Granny's ugly curtains) was simple and chic and modernized with a belt. The main word that comes to mind when I see Claire Danes these days is "effortless," and it certainly describes her look at the SAG Awards.
Tina Fey had one of the best looks she's ever worn to an awards ceremony (and one of the best looks of the night for me, too). She can be hit or miss, but this one was a total hit. Her simple chignon was perfect with the dramatic textural details of her dress (which had an impeccable fit). There's nothing funny about her look - she was seriously hot as hell. The vibrant red with her fair skin and dark hair was beautiful. She really, really impressed me.
Julianna Margulies really bored me at the Golden Globes but she stepped it up for the SAG Awards. The red is gorgeous against her fair complexion and the shape of the dress is very flattering for her slender figure. She wasn't one of my outstanding picks, but she was still very beautiful.
At first I wasn't sure if I liked Hilary Swank's look, but after going back and checking out the pictures, I really love it. The draping of the dress accentuates her amazing figure and the chain details add interest without being tacky. I love her simple curly hair and the natural, golden-girl makeup polishes off the look perfectly.
Kate Mara just looked absolutely disgusting (aside from her eyes - the smoky look was soft and pretty). The headband and hairstyle was weird. And that dress was one of the most awful creations I've ever seen. The top part looked like it was made from an old, dirty Ace bandage and the tiered ruffles on the bottom just didn't make sense. Not only do I not understand what was going through her head when she decided she wanted to wear this dress, I also don't understand what was going through the designer's head when he/she designed it.
Jayma Mays looked approximately 204802840284% better at the SAG Awards than she did at the Golden Globes. Her fluffy hair was natural and laid-back. Her makeup was so much prettier for her complexion this time around. And her dress, while still not my favorite, was much more flattering. I only wish she'd worn some simple champagne-colored shoes that matched the shoulder details of her dress a little better.
Jane Lynch was another big improvement from the Golden Globes. She took advantage of the hugely popular Spring trend color lavender, and it was so fresh and cheerful. The shape was flattering for her statuesque figure, and I love the bow and brooch detail at the waist. Thumbs way up!
While I wish Heather Morris had done a different color (she already did this at the Golden Globes), she pulled it off much better this go-around. The shape of her dress was flattering and the details on the bust were interesting and added nice texture. Her simple hair and makeup were a good fit, too. But I think this dress would have been much prettier in a sunnier shade of yellow with punchy red lips or in a pale green shade with soft pink lips.
Julia Stiles was sheer perfection and that's all there is to it. The shape of her dress was soft and probably very comfortable, and I love how it flowed from dark black, to deep blue, to crisp white. I'm not normally a fan of ombre fabric, but somehow her dress (and styling of hair and makeup) manage to be incredibly chic. The best part is that we've seen this silhouette a lot (it's very similar to Mila Kunis' dress) but the ombre design adds interest and makes it very unique.
Jenna Fischer was a big bummer for me. The silhouette of her dress has been really popular lately, but hers was so ill-fitting that it just couldn't work. The darts under the bust look like they were ironed in and the neckline looks like a 10 year-old sewed it. On top of that, the fabric and print are really odd to me. This was not a good look for her.
At least Helena Bonham Carter's dress was better than the one she wore at the Golden Globes (though it was still not too great). I was also pleased to see she managed to wear matching shoes, as well. But her hair continues to baffle me. Those 90s bangs are not flattering, and the updo she keeps wearing with the odd ponytail thing is so strange.
Christina Hendricks finally chose a hot look! It's retro in a totally different way than her character on Mad Men, and it's bangin' hot. The look is reminiscent of the 70s, and I love it. The hair and makeup were stylized perfectly. I loved her dress because it was so totally different from anything else I saw on the red carpet and the fit was so figure flattering and sexy.
Angie Harmon's cotton-candy confection of a dress was so soft and girly and yet sexy at the same time thanks to the exposed boning in the bodice. The very simple hair and makeup were perfect with the intricate design and textural details of the dress. She was one of my favorites of the night. I have a feeling she's going to get a lot of thumbs-down from other people for her look, but I loved it.
Susan Sarandon's rich purple dress was not only flattering for her complexion but also flattering for her heavy bustline. It was very age-appropriate while still being sexy. The updo was a little dated and I would have like to see her with softer hair and instead of a necklace, some standout earrings, but otherwise, this was a lovely look for her.
Rosario Dawson, who usually looks like a gross crackwhore, actually looked really good. I really liked her old-fashioned butter-hued dress and the pop of color she got from the dazzling jade earrings. This was a big boost for her because it usually seems like she couldn't shake her "Rent" character, Mimi.
Kyra Sedgwick is usually a perennial winner for me, but this look was just okay (her hair is what ruined it). I liked the simple black dress and the dramatized neckline was really unique in a sea of commonplace sweetheart necklines. I also loved that she followed the velvet trend and wore a luxurious fabric without making it look cheap or tacky. Her makeup was perfect, but her hair was just too messy and boring.
Not only was Julie Bowen's look totally hot, but her confidence was extremely sexy. When doing her E! interview with Giuliana Rancic, she basically said she didn't care what anyone thought and she loved her pants look. This look, while obviously more relaxed, was so much more flattering than her Golden Globes look. I'm totally impressed.
Annette Bening was another actress who looked a hell of a lot better at the SAG Awards than she did the Golden Globes. Her dress was much flashier with some interesting textural details, and I was pleased to see she at least put on some lipstick. While she won't win Best Dressed from me, this was a big improvement.
While I love Amy Poehler to infinity and I feel like she looked really great, her look was beyond inappropriate for the SAG Awards even though she was only a presenter. The dress, which had great structural details and an impeccable fit, was more appropriate for a business meeting or a luncheon.
Betty White completely rocks my world. She was glamorous and age-appropriate (she just turned 89!). And her humility was her best accessory because it was so endearing to see her genuinely shocked and surprised about winning the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award. So sweet!
Very pregnant Jane Krakowski showed off her baby bump in a gorgeous dress that I would kill to have. The one-shoulder look was so different because of the right half-sleeve, and the fit was perfect. I loved the unique jewels and flowers that detailed the dress because they added some serious glamour to a dress that other wise would have been nice but boring. Her hair and makeup look great, too, and the styling (shoes and accessories) were spot-on.
For once, I sort of liked Mindy Kaling. She has a curvy figure and I've noticed that a lot of the time, she really doesn't dress for it. I like the draping of her dress and the futuristic belt show off what a tiny waist she really has. I think the makeup is nice, but the hair is her downfall for me. It's kind of stringy and messy, and something soft and sleek would have looked a lot better.
So, if I have to go back through and pick my Best Dressed actresses of the SAG Awards, I have a tie between Amber Riley and her diva-fied black dress, Lea Michelle and her super swanky and sexy champagne dress, and Tina Fey in her impeccably-fitting and beautifully detailed red dress. There were a few others that I loved (Angie Harmon, Julia Stiles, Mariska Hargitay) but Amber, Lea, and Tina were my very favorite looks of the night.
So now for the real brutality, the Worst Dressed actresses of the SAG Awards. My top three absolute worsts were Kate Mara in her dirty Ace bandage dress, Naya Rivera in the bedazzled burlap sacks, and Dianna Agron in her weird-legnth dress. I kind of feel like these picks shouldn't be much of a surprise. A few honorable mentions are Winona Ryder, Jenna Fischer, and Amy Adams. Unfortunately, it won't surprise me if people actually like Amy Adams' look.
The Academy Awards will be February 27th, so be prepared for yet another brutal fashion breakdown.
