Every year, on the Friday before Mother's Day, the U.S. Social Security Administration releases its list of top baby names registered in the United States during the previous calendar year. While the data covers a thousand names for boys and girls, it is the top 100 baby names that get the most attention.
If you want to consider one of the top 100 girl names or top 100 boy names for an upcoming baby, or you just want to see what people are naming their children this year, then this is the list for you. We update our top 100 baby names list each year, as soon as the data is released by Social Security.
Of course, the list only tells half the story, so each year we publish an article covering all the changes in the top 100 baby names for the year – which names are in, which names are out, which name is number one, and which names are rising fast.
Before you pick a name from the top 100 baby names list, keep in mind that a lot of other parents are looking at the same list. Baby names go in and out of fashion, and the top 100 list plays a big part in fueling the latest fads! The top 100 girl names and top 100 boy names of 2009 look very different from the same list from 1980. Jennifer was the number one girl's name in 1980 – today it number 109! Remember Jason? He was the number 3 boy's name in 1980. Today he is number 66. So keep in mind that if you pick a top name, while it may be fashionable today, it may seem a little outdated in a few years.
One other caveat about picking a name from the top 100 baby names list. Lots of other kids will share your child's name. Ask any kindergarten teacher what name was hot about five years ago and they will be able to recite the top names with stunning accuracy. Yell "Isabella" on a playground five years from now, and maybe a quarter of the girls will respond!
Still, there is no doubt that many appealing names are on the top 100 list. There's a reason they make the list. Choosing a baby name isn't easy for most of us. At the end of the day, remember that the most important thing is that you really love the name you decide to give your child, and that it has meaning for you.
Please share your thoughts and ideas about the pros and cons of choosing a name from the top 100 list!
