Notice, I said "cut down," not "cut out." That would have been ridiculous!
When Husband and I met, my obsession went underground. He didn't know how bad it was until we moved in together and he started getting into my car amidst empty cups and paper bags filled with the remnants of satisfaction. Needless to say. he questioned me on this. His father had a pretty bad heart attack at the age of 49 and it seriously impacted his lifestyle and, in turn, mine.
This wasn't all bad...it was actually pretty good. I didn't mind eating healthy and working out? Well, I tolerated it. I still tanned (which is good friend made me completely give up a few years later...I still miss that too...ah, youth...what you didn't know could actually kill you) and looked pretty damn good tan. Oh well...lesson learned.
When I got pregnant is when things got really serious. I had to watch what I ate...thank you morning sickness (my first bout brought on by two desperately inhaled soft tacos...still yummy in my mind). Later on, I really had to watch what I ate...thanks Gestational Diabetes. It sucked...I hated it...I wanted gross disgusting junk food more than any other time in my life. It was not to be though...sadly.
When it came to feeding our children, there were some real decisions to be made. Do we spend money on the more expensive organic baby food or go with the regular. For Husband, the answer was simple...go organic. Since he brings home with organic bacon, I agreed. What could be better? (BTW...if you suggest I make my own, I might puke in my mouth...I have neither the patience nor the time, but I admire you if you do)
Now that the kids are on human food and off that slop in a cute little jar (why do I love those jars so much?), I've realized how difficult it can be to find organic food at our regular grocery store. I have also quickly realized how freaking expensive it is to eat organic. We don't do everything...milk, some vegetables, some fruits, and all meats (we just recently found chickens and chicken parts at our wholesale club...jackpot!). There should be a tax credit to people who try to eat healthy b/c it is freaking expensive!!!
Anyhow, the reason I write this post is to get an informal survey...how do you eat? Do you eat some organic? All organic? Grow your own food? Do you go to Farmers' Markets? I can't wait to start doing this in the Spring/Summer...I've never been to one!
Here was my motivation for this post...a list of fruits/veggies you should purchase organic and what you can skip...very helpful in my opinion and I need it here for when I go grocery shopping! Easy reference!
You do not need to buy these foods organic:
- Asparagus
- Avocado
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Eggplant
- Kiwi
- Mango
- Onions
- Papaya
- Pineapple
- Sweet corn (frozen)
- Sweet peas (frozen)
- Sweet potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Watermelon
- Apples
- Carrots
- Celery
- Cherries
- Grapes (imported)
- Kale
- Lettuce
- Nectarines
- Peaches
- Pears
- Sweet bell peppers
- Strawberries
BTW...my inner fat girl still comes out sometimes and allows me to imbibe...God, I love it. A perfect day would involve lots of wine, breakfast at McDonald's, lunch at KFC, dinner at In and Out Burger (although I have never actually been to one, I hear it's fabulous). I would also tan for a week to see if I'm still cute tan in the winter...I mean, who isn't?
