Yes. You read that correctly. I’m going to meet the world famous author of The Name of the Wind, Pat Rothfuss. As he mentioned on his blog yesterday, he’ll be driving through Kentucky, stopping about 3-hrs and a time-zone skip away from my house. So, on March 17, I’ll be leaving work early and taking a pleasant drive to Lexington, hopefully getting there with plenty of time to spare and meet Pat.
I can’t really contain my happiness at this happenstance. He’s going to be reading an excerpt from The Wise Man’s Fear and some other stuff, I think. I’ll probably have to buy another book and get it signed. Or I could just bring a random book with me and get it signed… My paperback’s unsigned, but it’s also in rough shape. My first edition hardback is signed, though. I mailed that bad boy to Pat a few years ago, back when Pat announced that he’d be happy to sign our books, as long as we mailed along something cool with it. Me, I mailed a quarter that I shot with a .22 rifle. Actually, Pat mentioned that [the quarter] on his blog at some point a few months later, and that was pretty cool.
The point is, I’ve been a Pat Rothfuss fan for a long time now. I feel like I’m a veteran fan. I discovered his book on my honeymoon, perusing a local bookstore in Asheville. This was May, 2007, just a few months after the book was released. I fell in love with the story and have recommended it to everyone that has an ear since. I even read it aloud to my wife and she enjoyed it.
I’ve never gone to see an author before, and I’m excited. I don’t know how many people will be there, but I’m sure we’ll all have a great time. Hanging out at a bookstore is always a great time. I’ll try to keep my excitement in check over the next week.
Pat will also be making a few other stops on his trek from WI to the east coast. Who knows, he may be in a town near you. You can find out his schedule here.
